So what do you do for Christmas? Do you do the same routine every year or are you doing something different?
Every Christmas I remember has consisted of Get up very early for presents, bacon sarnies for breakfast, nanna comes for dinner, Stuff face, Aunty, uncle and cousins come down for a party tea. Stuff face.
Then eat and drink a bit more. ;D

We always eat breakfast before opening presents. But other than that, we have no routine. Each year is different.
As a child, my brother and I could choose one gift to open on Christmas Eve. Had to wait until morning for all the others.

Seemed daft to start a new thread. Will probably be consuming more than the usual amount of alcohol this year, me thinks... Bit of a weird one; first Christmas without both my parents. Christmas Eve, drinks with the girls... Christmas Day, world just go away. Unless your name's Derek. Boxing Day, food, telly, food, telly. More food. More telly. So what kind of festive frivolities is everyone else up to?

Sounds good, hope you have a lovely time. 21st to the 26th is all family and friends, visiting and them all coming here etc. Going to be mad but I'm looking forward to it. Present shopping's almost done, got the food shop to do over the next few days which should be fun....! I love Christmas. ;D

Thanks Sal - you too. Good luck with the dreaded food shop... Sooner you than me Went and did all mine yesterday... Solely to avoid that 'last weekend before Christmas' supermarket carnage... Lovely it was, no congested aisles and no queues at the checkout... Everything's done; food bought, presents wrapped... Alcohol in plentiful supply... No work until the New Year and no need to go out now until Christmas Eve. ;D

And so to the New Year... Exciting/boring plans anyone...? Toddling off tomorrow morning for a last minute, very much needed change of scene... Beautiful rural location; complete peace and quiet for five whole days. Bliss. Advance apologies for any miserableness... Spent the last half of the year putting a brave face on... Just feeling a touch pensive and reflective right now... Close friends and just how important they are is what made 2012 what it was for me... Going into 2013, all I'd say to anyone is not to ever take those closest to you for granted... Even if you don't get on, try. Cliche alert - but oh so true. Life's too short. My dad and I weren't close; he just didn't do paternal... Clearly affected him less than it did me over the years. But five months after his passing, I'm surprised at just how many things I miss about him... Great timing EastEnders. They kill off Derek, who thought the world of his daughter and who never failed to put a smile on my face... And they leave poor Alice without her dad. Bastards Anyways - onwards and upwards... Next year will be a good one. For sure Happy New Year one and all!

So it would seem all the pubs are already taking bookings for Christmas dinner... Okay, fair enough - guess they all need to be getting a head start on it all... But seriously - 65 squids for a starter, main course and dessert... Just the price one of my local pubs is charging... And it's not as though it's even a traditional 'fill you up for the whole afternoon' meal... Everything's 'drizzled' with this or that... Then 'placed on a bed of' something or other... Finished 'with a haze of' something or other... All no doubt delicately positioned on a plate three times the size it needs to be Each to their own, but to my mind you can't beat a good old fashioned Christmas dinner... Full plates brimming with traditional fayre... Roast turkey and stuffing, oodles of crispy roast potatoes (yum!) and mountains of pigs in blankets.

If she's anything like my mum, she'll be up there perched on a cloud somewhere, all peaceful and content... Looking down on you and raising a glass. She certainly wouldn't want you to be sad. It will get easier.

Thanks, it's her birthday today too! She'll be having a party with some Snowballs. (she thought they didn't have alcohol in) She told me off for crying when she was in hospital so I dare say if I cry today or at Christmas she'll be telling me off.

Hehe - that's so reminiscent of my childhood Christmases... My mum loved Advocaat; I always remember a yellow bottle or two coming out over the festive period... Whether or not she was aware of any alcohol content, I couldn't say... But she was always smiling if she had a glass of it in her hand. Christmas seems to have a way of evoking memories... And memories are so so important. One amusing one I have of my mum is the day she inadvertently walked out of Tesco with an unpaid for Scissor Sisters album... As you do It had just been released and I really liked their stuff at the time... So we're walking around and I saw it; shoved it in the trolley with everything else; said I'd give her the money later... We paid for everything, trundled off to the car and toddled off home... Was only when we got there and my mum's going through her receipt, as she always used to do... Turns out it had got stuck under a six pack of Quavers and the security tag hadn't gone off... ;D

Hope you all have an absolutely fabby time next week! Hehe - my mum (God rest her soul) had a list of things she would invariably ask/say to me every year... Prior to my Christmas/New Year 'going out' shenanigans. All of which I would listen to and take on board wholeheartedly... Yeah right I'm sure this did/does sound familiar to a lot of you... 1. ''You sure you're gonna be warm enough?'' 2. ''Make sure you eat something before you go'' 3. ''Always keep your drink with you'' 4. ''Have you got enough money?'' 5. ''Don't get too drunk'' 6. ''Have you pre-booked your taxis''? This last one, I would actually really stress upon in today's society... Not meaning to sound patronising or condescending. Just want people to be on their guard and think about the things they wouldn't necessarily think about... Always pre-book the journey home where possible; a lot of dodgy cab firms out there... Always go to a taxi rank if not pre-booked; never hail one down off the street - however 'real' it might look... Always sit in the back... However convenient it may seem at the time, never get in a cab that pulls up alongside you... It might not actually be a genuine taxi. Not just talking extortionate fares here... More in terms of safety issues; I'm sure I don't need to elaborate. I'm now in my 40s and totally appreciate my mum's wisdom and where she was coming from... I'd give anything to hear her say it all again. Total love, concern and caring... Yet as a teenager, you just shut your ears and see it as nagging... sophiechiefs - Hope you and your family have a lovely Christmas. Your nan will be just fine; she'll be having her own fun, getting slowly annebriated on the old Advocaat... ;D She'll be thinking fondly of her family and celebrating each and every one of you... There'll be a right old party going on up there!
