Finally have had a chance to get onto my pc and write a review of the Bendigo Groovin the Moo festival which Kaiser Chiefs closed last Saturday
You may have already read some reviews from either Bendigo or the other spots and I'm sure most of you have seen the "slingshot" footage but I'll try and write what I can remember - yes a week already seems so long ago!
As per the UK tour shows Dire Straits filtered through the air as we waited for the boys to come onto stage. Think that may have been lost on most of the crowd as I am pretty sure that other than me, and a couple of other girls, most of the crowd was around 18 (i'm in my early 30's). This resulted in a lot of Beiber like screaming throughout the set, particularly when Ricky came to the barrier (i was 2 people back from the barrier, in the centre) and sang EIAN. Hilariously, the girl in front of me, who I had heard say to her friends, just before the show started "Who is going to be playing?" and when they replied "Kaiser Chiefs" she replied "Who are they?" yet when Ricky came close to her she was the one doing the most screaming! I guess Ricky does have that power though!! But in general the screaming and squealing was most annoying. (Am I showing my age?!) Having said that though, being a festival show with lots of Australian high profile alternative artists, most people that came to watch Kaiser Chiefs only really knew "Ruby", "IPAR", "NMAB" etc, there wasn't many that knew many songs other than that. To their credit, the boys put on a fantastic show that entertained the whole crowd, and my sister-in-law (who was quite happy to watch from the back) said the entire crowd was right into it. She really enjoyed it, and doesn't know KC that well other than the hits too.
The set list was as follows:
EILYLAL
EIAN
NMAB
Little Shocks
On The Run
IPAR
Angry Mob
Listen To Your Head
Kinda Girl You Are
Ruby
Take My Temperature
Oh My God
(Thanks to the guy that let me take a photo of the set list that he managed to score - I would never have remembered otherwise!)
As the guys came out and during the Dire Straits bit they had the "The Future Is Medieval" KC logo on the screen behind the band, then as each song started, the cover of the album from which it came from was displayed on that same screen. So we saw the covers from all four albums and then from "Souvenir" once they started playing "On The Run".
It was a really fast tight set, they seemed to be enjoying it, lots of smiles but it was just song after song after song! After they had pumped out the first 4 hits, Ricky spoke about how "Souvenir" was about to be released and said how it has a couple of new songs on it and then said to the crowd "you love hearing the new stuff right?!" then continued to ask the question until he was satisfied with the crowd response
During "IPAR" Ricky climbed the speakers at the side of stage, grabbed the clock that was up there (obviously to keep bands to their allocated time) and sat there and sang whilst cradling the clock (Flavor Flav - Public Enemy style - they had played a couple of hours prior to KC).
The highlight of the show for me, and probably everyone there was during "Take My Temperature" - this is where you have probably already seen the Youtube footage.
During the part in the song where Ricky always runs off, climbs speakers, scaffolding etc etc, he disappeared, I assumed he was climbing the scaffolding just out of my vision, then on the screen where the album covers were displayed, suddenly a shot of the cage of the reverse bungee (or slingshot) appeared, I still didn't click, thinking "whoops, the camera guy has stuffed up!", but then I saw Whitey looking off in the distance, past the scaffolding and he starting doing the two fingers "i'm watching you" type signal. Then I clicked, and I think everyone else did too (unless you were standing right at the side of stage near the reverse bungee and had Ricky run past and go into the cage in which case it was obvious what was going to happen!) To Ricky's credit he still did manage to sing and be audible (just) once he was launched into the air. Very gutsy, there is no way I would have gone on that ride! Then once it was over (the song was still going) he came back on, slightly unsteady on his feet but made it through to the end - to huge cheers! Unsure if the rest of the band knew he was going to do it or not..... Anyway, thank goodness that someone uploaded the footage to youtube because typically just at that moment my camera's battery went flat!!
The only disappointment was with the last song they played being "Oh My God", once it was over I knew there was not going to be an encore. And sure enough they finished, walked off stage, the lights came up and the crew came in and started packing up. That and the fact that their light show makes it really hard to take decent photos on a crappy camera like mine! Oh, and it was bloody cold! When you were amongst the crowd you didn't feel it, but as soon as you were jumping, you got slapped in the face by the chilly air.
Long story short though, Kaiser Chiefs were amazing, high energy and really got the crowd involved. So just another regular gig for them then really! I loved it and can't wait for the next!
Will pop some really crappy photos of the gig in the live photos section, and a photo of the Australian/NZ tour t-shirts that were on sale in the merchandise section (I think there is one of those on here......).
Have also uploaded Listen To Your Head from the night onto youtube. This is the link: youtu.be/Hl56q9jbLZI
And just because I think that you can't beat Howlaround as an opening song - I have uploaded it from the concert in Melbourne last year here: youtu.be/46sSodqj-5A
So next for me is Melbourne again, this coming Wednesday - very excited! Will hopefully get some better pictures (wishful thinking) and footage and post it all in the coming weeks. Can't believe after Wednesday it is all over for me for probably a while
